They are denouncing him for applying the Sunnah and saying that it divides the Muslims

The imam of our mosque said in a Friday khutbah that we should not be strict in following the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) because the Sunnah divides Muslims and we must be united. He quoted as evidence the fact that a Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allaah, tell me of an action which, if I do it, I will enter Paradise. He said: Worship Allaah and do not associate anything with Him, establish the prescribed prayers, pay the obligatory zakaah and fast Ramadaan.” He said: By the One in Whose hand is my soul, I shall never do anything more or less than that. When he turned to leave, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever would like to look upon a man who is one of the people of Paradise, let him look upon this man.”
Is this correct? Please note that we are followers of the Sunnah, and he calls the one who follows the Sunnah an extremist.
Please advise us, may Allaah bless you.

Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly:
Your imam has said something that is wrong and false. What he should have done was fear Allaah his Lord and refrain from speaking words that involved sin.
The Prophetic Sunnah is the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his words and deeds. How can the Sunnah be dividing the Muslims?! What can unite them if the Sunnah divides them?
If this imam was sincere he would have said that the Sunnah is what unites people, and brings them together.
Imam Abu’l-Muzaffar al-Sam’aani (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The reason why ahl al-hadeeth were united is that they learned their religion from the Qur'aan and Sunnah and sound reports, which united them and brought them together, whereas the followers of innovation learned their religion by means of reasoning, which divided them and made them differ. Al-Intisaar li Ahl al-Hadeeth (p. 47),
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
The cause of unity and harmony is accepting the religion as a whole and following all of it, which is worshipping Allaah alone with no partner or associate, as He enjoined, both inwardly and outwardly. The cause of division is failing to do some of that which is enjoined upon a person, and transgression among different groups.
The result of unity is mercy from Allaah, His pleasure and blessings, happiness in this world and in the Hereafter and brightness of the face, whereas the result of division is the punishment and curse of Allaah, darkness of the face and the disavowal of the Messenger.
Majmoo’ al-Fataawa (1/17).
He (may Allaah have mercy on him) also said:
Accepting sound reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) brings harmony, as was narrated from Maalik (may Allaah have mercy on him) who said: When knowledge decreases harshness will prevail and when there is little knowledge of hadeeth then whims and desires will prevail.
Dar’ al-Ta’aarud (1/149)
How can the follower of the Sunnah be called an extremist when the Muslim is enjoined to follow it and take the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) as his example? What would this imam say about the deeds of the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) when they followed the Sunnah of their Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) so closely? What would he say about this event?
It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: Whilst the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was leading his companions in prayer, he took off his sandals and placed them to his left. When the people saw that, they took off their sandals too. When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) finished the prayer he said: What made you take off your sandals? They said: We saw you take off your sandals so we took ours off too. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Jibreel (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came to me and told me that there was some dirt on them. and he said: When one of you comes to the mosque, let him look and if he sees any dirt (impurity) on his shoes, let him wipe it off and pray in them.”
Narrated by Abu Dawood (650); classed as saheeh by al-Albaani.
These companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) took off their shoes whilst praying simply because they saw their Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) take off his shoes. So what if it was a Sunnah narrated from him or it was something that he taught?
Secondly:
Criticizing the followers of the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and accusing them of being extremists or fanatics is offensive and is slander. Allaah has issued a warning to the one who does that, let alone the fact that it is an imitation of the mushrikeen who did this before him.
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And those who annoy believing men and women undeservedly, they bear (on themselves) the crime of slander and plain sin”
[al-Ahzaab 33:58]
“Verily, (during the worldly life) those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.
30. And, whenever they passed by them, used to wink one to another (in mockery).
31. And when they returned to their own people, they would return jesting;
32. And when they saw them, they said: ‘Verily, these have indeed gone astray’”
[al-Mutaffifeen 83:29-32]
Shaykh al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
“And when they saw them” means, when the sinners saw the believers, they said:
“Verily, these have indeed gone astray” i.e., gone astray from the right path, and they are backward and narrow-minded and extreme, and other such labels. Those people have their successors in our own times. Some people say of good people that they are regressive and backward, and they say of the one who is religiously committed that he is extremist and narrow-minded. Even worse than all of that, they said of the Messengers that they were sorcerers or madmen. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Likewise, no Messenger came to those before them but they said: ‘A sorcerer or a madman!’” [al-Dhaariyaat 51:52]. The heirs of the Messengers, who are the scholars and those who are religiously committed encounter the same from the enemies of the Messengers as the Messengers encountered, of offensive labels and mockery, and so on. Among these accusations that the followers of innovation and those who deny the attributes of Allaah gave to those of the early generation who affirmed His attributes was that they thought of Allaah as a physical being, and other such negative accusations which put people off from the right way.
Liqaa’aat al-Baab il-Maftooh (no. 30).
Thirdly:
The kind of strictness in religious adherence which is to be criticized is that which regards mustahabb things as obligatory and makrooh things as haraam. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) warned against going to extremes in religion, and he also warned against undue strictness. Extremism and strictness does not mean applying the Sunnah, rather it means changing its rulings and being too strict with regard to commands and prohibitions when that is not the case.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said – commenting on the hadeeth, “Do not be too strict with yourselves, for some people were strict on themselves and Allaah was strict on them, and we see the remnants of that in their hermitages and monasteries.” - :
Here the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade being strict in religion by going beyond what is prescribed. Strictness may sometimes means taking what is not obligatory or mustahabb and making it obligatory or mustahabb with regard to acts of worship, and sometimes it may mean taking something that is not haraam or makrooh and making it haraam or makrooh with regard to things that are good. The reason for that is that Allaah was very strict on those among the Christians who were too strict on themselves, until it ended up in the innovation of monasticism.
Thus it may be noted that the Prophet disliked such things that the Christians did, such as innovation of monasticism, even though many devoted Muslims have fallen into the same trap on the basis of their interpretation for which they may be excused, or they fell into this trap with no justification.
It may also be noted that being too strict with oneself in the beginning may lead to further strictness imposed by Allaah, either through laws or through His decree. As for laws, this is what the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) feared during his own time, of an increase in obligations or prohibitions such as that which he feared when they gathered to pay Taraweeh with him, and when they asked about things that had not been forbidden, and such as the fact that when a person vows to do an act of worship it becomes obligatory for him to do it even though he is forbidden to make vows, and similarly expiations which become obligatory for specific reasons.
As for the divine decree, we have often seen and heard that those who go to extremes in some issues, will be caused to suffer in ways that lead to things becoming more strict on him with regard to what is obligatory and what is haraam, such as many of those who are affected with waswaas about purification. When they do more than is prescribed, they will end up suffering from things that lead to something that may cause more hardship and harm to them.
Iqtida’ al-Siraat al-Mustaqeem (103, 104).
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, commenting on the hadeeth of the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “O people, beware of going to extremes in religious matters for those who came before you were doomed because of going to extremes in religious matters.”  Narrated by al-Nasaa’i (3059) and Ibn Maajah (3029); classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Nasaa'i:
In this hadeeth the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) warned his ummah against going to extremes and proved that going to extremes is a cause of doom, because it is contrary to sharee’ah, and because it led to the downfall of previous nations. So it may be understood from this that going to extremes is haraam for two reasons:
1 –He (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) warned against it, and a warning is a prohibition and more.
2 –It is the cause of nations’ downfall as those who came before us were destroyed, and whatever is the cause of doom is haraam.

With regard to worship, people may go to one of two extremes or be moderate. Some are negligent, some exaggerate and some are moderate.
The proper way (as prescribed by Islam) is the middle way between going to extremes and being negligent. Being moderate and not inclining towards either extreme is what is required. It is not permissible to exaggerate and go to extremes in religious matters, or to be careless and not pay any heed. Rather we should tread a middle path between both.
Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (9/367, 368).
Fourthly:
The hadeeth which your imam quoted as evidence was narrated by al-Bukhaari (1333) and Muslim (14), and there is no dispute as to its soundness, but he has misunderstood it. If he had studied its narrations and what the scholars said, he would not have quoted it as evidence in this manner. According to a report narrated by al-Bukhaari, it says, “and taught him the laws of Islam.” This wording includes all other obligatory duties, and things that are recommended.
Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
The words “he was asking about Islam” mean, about the laws of Islam. It may be understood that he asked about the realties of Islam. He did not mention the Shahaadah to him because he knew that he already knew it, or he knew that he was asking about practical laws, or he mentioned it but the narrator did not transmit it because it is so well known. And he did not mention Hajj either because it had not been enjoined yet or because the narrator had shortened the report. This second view is supported by the report narrated by the compiler – i.e., al-Bukhaari – concerning fasting via Ismaa’eel ibn Ja’far from Abu Suhayl in this hadeeth. He said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told him of the laws of Islam, and he included all obligatory and recommended deeds in that.
“And the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) mentioned zakaah” – in the report of Ismaa’eel ibn Ja’far it says: He told me of what Allaah had enjoined upon me of zakaah. He said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told him of the laws of Islam. This report shows that there were things in the story that were told in brief form, such as explaining the minimum thresholds for paying zakaah, which are not explained in these two reports, and neither are the names of the prayers. It seems that the reason for that is that these things were well known among them, or that the purpose of the story was to show that the one who adheres to the obligatory duties will be saved even if he does not do naafil actions.
With regard to him succeeding when he does not fall short in that, this is clear, but how can he succeed if he does not add anything to it?  Al-Nawawi answered by saying that the hadeeth confirms that he will succeed because he has done what he is required to do, and there is nothing to suggest that if he does more than that he will not be successful, because if he succeeds by doing what is obligatory, he is more likely to succeed if he does recommended actions as well as obligatory deeds.
Fath al-Baari (1/108)
We hope that the imam will think about the phrase “and he taught him the laws of Islam”, and we hope that he will think about the last words that we have quoted from al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar, in which he approved of the words of Imam al-Nawawi, that success is more likely for the one who does the obligatory duties and adds to them the recommended deeds.
Fifthly:
We advise you to adhere to the commands of Allaah, may He be exalted, and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and we also advise you to adhere to the Sunnah and kept doing mustahabb deeds, without going to extremes or exaggerating, and teach that to people with wisdom and good methods. It is not permissible for you to put people off by being too strict in matters that are broad in scope, or by making mustahabb things obligatory, or by going to extremes in denouncing people, especially the elite such as the imam of the mosque or the mufti or one who holds a similar status in people’s eyes. Listen to this comprehensive advice from a great scholar:
Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan (may Allaah preserve him) said:
You must adhere to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and stick to it, and not pay any attention to the criticism of those who criticize you or blame you for that. If your parents criticize you for adhering to the Sunnah and they want you to be heedless about that, then do not obey them with regard to that, especially if these sunnahs are obligatory duties that must be adhered to, and they are not just mustahabb, so long as it does not reach the level of being exaggeration. But if it means that you are exaggerating, then that is not appropriate, rather you should be balanced and moderate in applying the Sunnah and acting upon it, without going to extremes or exaggerating, and without being careless or heedless. This is what you should do. Whatever the case, you will be rewarded – in sha Allaah – and you must adhere to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and try to convince those who are criticizing you about that, especially your parents. You should encourage them to follow the Sunnah and explain to them the reward and goodness that there is in that. Perhaps they will drop these objections, and maybe this deed will cause them to also adhere to the Sunnah, and you will be the one who called them to Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted. Undoubtedly the one who wants to call people to Allaah is obliged to begin with his relatives and the closest of people to him, and one’s parents are among the closest of people to a person.
Whatever the case, if your adherence to the Sunnah does not go to extremes of exaggeration, then it is something praiseworthy, and you must continue in it, and call your parents and others to it. And Allaah knows best.
Al-Muntaqa min Fataawa al-Shaykh al-Fawzaan (2/301, 302)
Finally: Just as it is blameworthy exaggeration to make mustahabb things like obligatory deeds or makrooh things like haraam deeds, or to oblige ourselves to do things that Allaah has not made obligatory upon us, it is also ignorance of the basic principles of sharee’ah to ignore the important general principle which is that harmony and love among Muslims are essential, and we must be united in adhering to Islam and protect the honour of the Muslim from criticism and shame, let alone aggression and harm. It is ignorance to neglect all of that just because someone adheres to something that is mustahabb but others do not see it as such, or to something that he does not adhere to, and respond by transgressing against the Muslim’s honour or rights because he neglects something that others adhere to. It is by such means that the accursed enemy attains his goal among the believers, and it is even worse when it happens in a foreign land where others see us as representatives of Islam.
Imam Muslim narrated in his Saheeh (2812) that Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “The Shaytaan has despaired of being worshipped in the Arabian Peninsula, but he will sow seeds of discord among them.”
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
As for the description of prayer, one of its issues is the Basmalah (saying Bismillaah…), and the people differ as to whether it is a verse of the Qur'aan or not, and whether it is to be recited or not. Both sides have written books that show a great deal of ignorance and wrongdoing, even though the issues is not that serious. Adhering blindly to one’s view in these and similar matters is one of the signs of division and dissent which is forbidden for us. The reason for discussing these controversial minor issues is to find out which view is more sound, as these issues are among the least serious controversial issues, but the shaytaan may play a role in creating divisions among Muslims because of these minor issues.
Then he said: It is mustahabb for a man to try to reconcile people by refraining from these mustahabb deeds, because the interests served by reconciling people in Islam is greater than the interest served by doing such things. Similarly, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) decided not to change the structure of the Ka’bah, because leaving it as it was would reconcile people, and Ibn Mas’ood criticized ‘Uthmaan for offering prayers in full whilst travelling, but he still prayed behind him when he offered the prayer in full, and said: Dissent is evil.
Majmoo’ al-Fataawa (22/405-407).

When I hear the Qur’aan or read it, I am not moved by hearing it and my heart is not stirred and does not feel humble, whereas sometimes when I listen to nasheed I am moved deeply. What is the solution?.

When I hear the Qur’aan or read it, I am not moved by hearing it and my heart is not stirred and does not feel humble, whereas sometimes when I listen to nasheed I am moved deeply. What is the solution?.

Praise be to Allaah.
The Qur’aan is the best and most beneficial of speech, and the most moving and the most effective in guiding the soul. Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Allâh has sent down the Best statement, a Book (this Qur'ân), its parts resembling each other (in goodness and truth), and oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it (when they recite it or hear it). Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allâh. That is the guidance of Allâh. He Guides therewith whom He wills and whomever Allâh sends astray, for him there is no guide”
[al-Zumar 39:23]
“The believers are only those who, when Allâh is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His Verses (this Qur'ân) are recited unto them, they (i.e. the Verses) increase their Faith; and they put their trust in their Lord (Alone)”
[al-Anfaal 8:2].
The fact that a Muslim is not moved when he hears or reads Qur’aan, but he is moved when he hears nasheeds, is an alarming sign. Your quest indicates that you are not happy with the situation, so you have to hasten to remedy the matter before it gets worse. The remedy is as follows:
1.     Read the Qur’aan a great deal because neglecting the Qur’aan is a cause of a person being deprived of benefiting from the Qur’aan.
2.     Pay attention to learning the meanings of the Qur’aan, even if that is from a brief tafseer such as the Tafseer of al-Sa‘di (may Allah have mercy on him). The reason why you do not feel humble or are not moved by the Qur’aan may be that you do not know its meanings.
3.     Remember Allah a great deal and obey Him. This is an important means of softening the heart and dispelling hardheartedness.
4.     Repent to Allah from all sins, and adhere to the commands of Allah. A person may be punished for his sins by being deprived of goodness, humility and contemplation.
5.     Listen to nasheeds less often, or stop listening to them altogether, so that your heart will become healthy and sound, and will go back to being moved by and benefiting from the words of Allah.
There follow fatwas from some of the scholars concerning this matter.
Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan (may Allah preserve him) said:
With regard to what you call Islamic nasheeds, they have been given more time, effort and organisation than they deserve, to the extent that they have become an art form that takes up space in curricula and school activities; people record them and reproduce them in large amounts for sale and distribution, and they fill most homes. Young men and women listen to them to such an extent that they take up a great deal of their time and listening to them takes precedence over recordings of the Holy Qur’aan, the Prophet’s Sunnah, lectures and useful academic lessons. End quote.
Al-Bayaan li Akhta’ ba‘d al-Kuttaab, p. 342
Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
The best advice that can be given for healing the heart and dispelling hardheartedness is to pay attention to the Holy Qur’aan, ponder it and read it a great deal, as well as remembering Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, a great deal. Reading and pondering the Holy Qur’aan, as well as remembering Allah a great deal, and saying, “Subhaan Allah wal hamdu Lillah wa laa ilaaha ill-Allah wa Allahu akbar; Subhaan Allah wa bi hamdih, subhaan Allah il-‘Azeem; Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wahdahu laa shareeka lah, lahu’l-mulk wa lahu’l-hamd yuhyi wa yumeet wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer (Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, there is no god but Allah and Allah is Most Great; Glory and praise be to Allah, glory be to Allah the Almighty; there is no god but Allaah alone, with no partner or associate, His is the Dominion and to Him be praise, He gives life and gives death, and He has power over all things)” -- all of these are means of removing hardheartedness.
End quote from Majmoo‘ Fataawa Ibn Baaz, 24/388
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
Causes of hardheartedness include: turning away from Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, and not reading Qur’aan; being preoccupied with this world and focusing mostly on it, and not paying attention to matters of religion, because obeying Allah, may He be exalted, makes the heart soft and brings one back to Allah, may He be blessed and exalted. The remedy for that is to turn to Allah, repent to Him, remember Him a great deal, read the Qur’aan a great deal, and do acts of worship, as much as one can. End quote.
Fataawa Noor ‘ala al-Darb by Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 12/171
And Allah knows best.

What is the reward for keeping a promise and the punishment for breaking a promise?.

What is the reward for keeping a promise and the punishment for breaking a promise?.
Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly:
The verses of the Holy Qur’aan and the hadeeths of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) indicate that fulfilling promises and covenants is obligatory, and they point to abhorrence of the sin of the one who breaks them or fails to fulfil them. Failing to fulfil them may go so far as to constitute kufr, as happened to the Children of Israel and others when they broke the covenant with their Lord and abandoned their pledge to Allah to believe in Him and follow His Messengers. Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And fulfil (every) covenant. Verily! the covenant, will be questioned about”
[al-Isra’ 17:34]
“and fulfill the Covenant of Allâh”
[al-An ‘am 6:152]
And He says, praising His believing slaves (interpretation of the meaning):
“Those who fulfil the Covenant of Allâh and break not the Mîthâq (bond, treaty, covenant)”
[al-Ra ‘d 13:20].
Many texts of the Qur’aan and Sunnah clearly indicate that it is obligatory to fulfil promises and covenants, and it is haraam to break them and act in a treacherous manner. All the verses that mention promises and covenants indicate that both explicitly and implicitly.
The practice of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and his Companions is the clearest testimony to that and application thereof.
Secondly:
Allah has decreed for fulfilling promises great benefits in this world and in the Hereafter, in addition to the obvious benefits of creating a righteous and stable society. Among these benefits are the following:
*
Fulfilling promises is one of the attributes of the pious according to the Book of Allah, and it one of the greatest means of attaining taqwa (piety, consciousness of Allah). Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Yes, whoever fulfils his pledge and fears Allâh much; verily, then Allâh loves those who are Al-Muttaqûn (the pious)”
[Aal ‘Imraan 3:76].
*
Fulfilling promises is a means of attaining security in this world and preventing bloodshed, and of protecting the rights of people, both Muslims and kaafirs, as Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“but if they seek your help in religion, it is your duty to help them except against a people with whom you have a treaty of mutual alliance, and Allâh is the All-Seer of what you do”
[al-Anfaal 8:72].
*
It is a means of expiating bad deeds and gaining admittance to Paradise, as we see in the words of Allah in Soorat al-Baqarah (interpretation of the meaning):
“and fulfill (your obligations to) My Covenant (with you) so that I fulfill (My Obligations to) your covenant (with Me)”
[al-Baqarah 2:40].
Ibn Jareer said: His covenant with them is that if they do that, He will admit them to Paradise. End quote.
In Soorat al-Maa’idah, Allah, may He be glorified, states that He took a covenant from Bani Israa’eel, then He explained that covenant and stated the reward for fulfilling it, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Verily, I will expiate your sins and admit you to Gardens under which rivers flow (in Paradise)”
[al-Maa’idah 5:12].
And there are other reports which are clear to anyone who ponders the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), both his words and actions.
There are many verses and hadeeths about this topic; we advise you to refer to the books Riyadh al-Saaliheen by Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him), and al-Targheeb wal Tarheeb by Imam al-Mundhiri (may Allah have mercy on him).
Thirdly:
Betrayal or treachery is the opposite of trustworthiness and loyalty. If trustworthiness and loyalty are the qualities of faith and piety, then betrayal and treachery are the qualities of hypocrisy and evil --Allah forbid.
It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “There are four characteristics, whoever has them all is a pure hypocrite: when he speaks he lies, when he makes a promise he breaks it, when he makes a covenant he betrays it, and when he disputes he resorts to obscene speech. Whoever has one of them has one of the characteristics of hypocrisy, until he gives it up.”
Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3178; Muslim, 58.
It was narrated that ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever breaks the covenant of a Muslim, upon him be the curse of Allah, the angels and all the people, and Allah will not accept any obligatory or naafil act of worship from him.”
Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1870; Muslim, 1370.
It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said:
“Allaah will set up a banner for the betrayer on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said: This is the betrayer of So and so.”
Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6178; Muslim, 1735.
We ask Allah to make us among those who fulfil promises and covenants and to grant us refuge from treachery and breaking of promises, and to help us to do good in word and deed… Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds.
See: al-‘Ahd wal Mithaaq fil Qur’an al-Kareem by Prof. Dr. Naasir Sulaymaan al-‘Umar.

Is it permissible to swear a false oath in order to reconcile between two disputing parties?

Is it permissible to swear a false oath in order to reconcile between two disputing parties?.

Praise be to Allaah.

The basic principle for
the Muslim is to be honest and truthful, and he should not speak anything
but the truth, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“O you who believe! Fear Allaah, and be with those who are
true (in words and deeds)”

[al-Tawbah 9:119]

And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him) said: “I urge you to be truthful, for “Truthfulness leads to
righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man will keep speaking
the truth and striving to speak the truth until he will be recorded with
Allaah as a siddeeq (speaker of the truth). Lying leads to immorality and
immorality leads to Hellfire. A man will keep telling lies and striving to
tell lies until he is recorded with Allaah as a liar.” Narrated by
al-Bukhaari, 5743; Muslim, 2607, from the hadeeth of ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood
(may Allaah be pleased with him).

Reconciling between people is an important issue in Islam,
one which brings a great deal of reward. There is also a stern warning
against sewing discord between people. Because of the importance of
reconciling people in the Muslim society and the seriousness of discord and
conflict, Allaah has permitted lying in order to reconcile between people
and to remove discord and conflict which may have negative consequences for
the religious commitment of individuals and communities.

It was narrated from Abu’l-Darda’ (may Allaah be pleased with
him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Shall I not tell you of something that is better than fasting, prayer and
charity?” They said: Yes. He said: “Reconciling between two people, for
discord between people is the shaver.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who said:
this is a hasan hadeeth. And it is narrated that the Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “It is the shaver, and I do not say
that it shaves hair, rather that it shaves religious commitment.” End
quote.

Whomsoever Allaah honours and enables him to reconcile
between Muslims, if he needs to tell lies in order to reconcile between
them, there is no sin on him for that, and it is not permissible to describe
him as a liar, because the matter is serious; it is the matter of shar’i
interests which means that in this case, lying is permissible, as it is
narrated in al-Saheehayn from the hadeeth of Umm Kalthoom bint ‘Uqbah
(may Allaah be pleased with her) that she heard the Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “He is not a liar who reconciles
between people, conveying good messages and saying good things.” Narrated by
al-Bukhaari, 2546; Muslim, 2605

As for swearing false oaths in order to reconcile between
people, it seems that this is permissible.

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him)
said:

What is prescribed for the believers is to use oaths
sparingly, even if they are true, because swearing oaths a great deal may
cause him to end up lying, and it is known that lying is haraam, and if a
lie is accompanied by an oath, it is even more haraam. But if necessity or
shar’i interests dictate that a false oath be sworn, there is no sin in
that, because it is proven in the hadeeth of Umm Kalthoom bint ‘Uqbah ibn
Abi Mu’eet (may Allaah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “He is not a liar who reconciles
between people, conveying good messages and saying good things.” She said: I
did not hear him grant any concession concerning anything that the people
say of lies except in three cases: reconciling between people, war, and what
a man says to his wife, or a woman says to her husband. Narrate by Muslim in
al-Saheeh.

If a person says in
order to reconcile between people, “By Allaah, your companions want to
reconcile, they want to come to an agreement, they want such and such,” then
he goes to the others and says something similar, with good intentions and
aiming to bring about a reconciliation, there is no sin in that, because of
the hadeeth quoted above.

Similarly, if he sees someone who wants to kill another
person unlawfully, or to wrong him in some other way, and he says, “By
Allaah he is my brother,” in order to rid him of this wrongdoer who wants to
kill him unlawfully or beat him unlawfully, because he knows that if he says
that he is his brother, he will leave him alone out of respect for him, then
he has to say such a thing in the interests of saving his brother from
injustice and wrongdoing.

To conclude: the basic
principle concerning false oaths is that they are haraam, except in cases
where they will serve a greater purpose than lying, as in the three cases
mentioned in the hadeeth quoted above.

End quote.

Ruling on one who puts something in his back passage, and how can he be treated?

What is the ruling on one who puts something in his back passage?.

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

We ask Allaah to cleanse his heart and body, and to guide
him to the best of attitudes, words and deeds.

 Secondly:

It should be noted that this action of his comes under the
heading of perversion. It is not by doing such actions that the Muslim
expresses gratitude to his Lord, may He be glorified and exalted, and it is
not in this manner that the Muslim will preserve the great blessings that
Allaah has bestowed upon him. He should give up these perverse actions which
go against the sound nature that Allaah has instilled in man, and go against
all revealed laws, and for which everyone of sound mind will hate him.

Thirdly:

It should be noted that such perverse actions are a sign of
an idle mind, and he has to give up the things that led him to behave in the
manner of perverts. Perhaps among these reasons – and the greatest of them –
is having a heart that is devoid of faith, and a soul that is devoid of
shyness before Allaah and His angels, as well as watching haraam TV series,
movies and perverse actions, and having a life that is devoid of useful
work, not wanting to get married and liking to stay alone, and many other
such reasons which may cause a man to fall into bad ways.

Fourthly:

He should hasten to give up this perverse action and repent
to his Lord. He must strive to furnish his heart with faith and fill his
life with righteous deeds and actions that will benefit his spiritual and
worldly interests. He must be keen to hasten to protect himself by means of
marriage to a righteous woman who will help him to remain chaste and obey
his Lord, and he must stop watching haraam things or staying alone which
makes it easy for him to fall into immoral ways.

Fifthly:

He should also note that he is causing physical and
psychological harm to himself. He will see the negative consequences of what
he is doing on his body after a while, and he will see how much
psychological pain he will suffer, which will deprive him of sleep and
prevent him from enjoying his food and drink. He will see how much he will
suffer of physical pain which will prevent him from relieving himself with
ease, and how much he will suffer of infections and ulcers if he persists in
this perverse action of his.

Sixthly:

He needs someone to explain to him that what he is doing is
haraam, and to remind him and exhort him (to follow the right path).

The one who is afflicted with any of these haraam actions has
to remember two things:

1-
To feel shy before Allaah and
his angels and before himself too.

2-
To fear death and to fear lest
Allaah causes him to die when he is doing that to himself.

With regard to shyness:

We know that he believes that Allaah can see him in all
situations, but perhaps he forgets about that at the time when he is
committing this sin. If this belief becomes established in his heart, with
time he will begin to feel shy of Allaah seeing him falling short in
obedience or committing a sin. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Knows he not that Allaah does see (what he does)?”

[al-‘Alaq 96:14]

“And indeed We have created man, and We know what his
ownself whispers to him. And We are nearer to him than his jugular vein (by
Our Knowledge)”

[Qaaf 50:16]

‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood
(may Allaah be pleased with him) said: Feel shy before Allaah is the true
sense of the word. They said: We feel shy before Allaah. He said: That is
not the way; the one who feels shy before Allaah in the true sense of the
word should be watchful of his mind and whatever enters it, and he should be
watchful of his stomach and whatever enters it, and he should remember death
and decay. Whoever hopes for the reward in the Hereafter would shun the
temptation of this world. Whoever does that is shy before Allaah in the true
sense of the word.

Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb,
1724.

He believes that Allaah has appointed noble angels over him
who can see him and hear him, and they record what he does of good deeds and
bad deeds, and they never leave him in any situation. If he feels shy of
them, he will give up the perverse actions that he is doing.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“But verily, over you (are appointed angels in charge of
mankind) to watch you,

11. Kiraaman (Honourable) Kaatibeen —writing down (your
deeds),

12. They know all that you do”

[al-Infitaar 82:10-12]

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

i.e., feel shy before
these honourable watchers and respect them; spare them from seeing you do
anything which you would not want those who are like you to see you doing,
for the angels are offended by that which offends the sons of Adam. If the
son of Adam would be offended by one who commits immoral actions and sins in
front of him, even if he might also do something similar, then how do you
think the honourable recording angels will be offended?

Al-Jawaab al-Kaafi, p. 75

One of the salaf said: With you are those who never leave
you, so feel shy of them and respect them.

He would feel shy of doing that in front of people, so how
can he not feel shy before Allaah and His angels?

With regard to death:

He should remember that he does not know when the Angel of
Death will come to him to take his soul, and he does not know the situation
that he will be in at that time. Would he like his death to come now, before
he repents? Would he like his soul to be taken when he is doing this
perverse action? Does he not know that deeds are judged according to a
person’s final deeds? Does he not know that Allaah will raise the people in
the same condition that they died? What will his situation be when he
emerges from his grave on the Day of Resurrection? What will he say to his
Lord when he stands before Him?

One of the salaf said: There are two things that put an end
of enjoyment of this world for me: remembering death, and remembering the
standing before Allaah, may He be exalted.

‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azeez (may Allaah have mercy on him) used
to gather the scholars and they would talk about death, the Resurrection and
the Hereafter, and they would weep so much that it was as if there was a
funeral taking place before them.

One of the salaf said: The one who remembers death is
honoured with three things: hastening to repent, contentment of heart and
energy for worship. Whoever forgets death is punished with three things:
delaying repentance, not being content with enough, and laziness in worship.

It should be noted that a good end is only granted to the one
who was righteous both inwardly and outwardly, and a bad end is given to one
who was inwardly corrupt, or who persisted in major sins. It should be noted
that a man will die as he lived, and his life will end in the manner that he
persisted in and did not give up.

It was said to a man who was in the throes of death: “Say
Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah.” And he started singing, because he used to be
infatuated by singing. It was said to a drinker when he was dying: “Say
Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah,” and he started saying: “Drink and pour me
some.”

Perhaps what we have mentioned is sufficient to make him give
up his evil deeds and come back to his Lord, and to ask Him to help him and
guide him. We have given more advice and suggestions in the answer to
question no. 20068, which we
hope he will read too.

We ask Allaah to guide him and set his affairs straight.

And Allaah is the Source of strength.

End of the note

Is there any hadd punishment or expiation for masturbation?

I would like to know.Due to masturbation I broke my hymen.Does this makes me a zaniya.Do i have to be punished with hundred lashes or is there any other punishment for this in our religion. And if there is please let me know and I also want to know can I marry a chaste person after indulging in masturbation so many times. Please answer in accordance with Quran and Sunnah.

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

The secret habit (masturbation) is haraam, as
we have explained in the answer to question no. 329. You have to repent from this
action and give it up, and regret what you have done, and resolve not to go back to it.

There are many punishments for the sinner in
this world, let alone the punishment that he deserves in the Hereafter. We have already mentioned some of these punishments in the answer to
question no. 23425. So hasten to repent sincerely before you are no longer able to do
so, and before you feel regret at the time when regret will be to no avail.

If Allaah honours you by enabling you to
repent, you will be forgiven for this sin, and it will be as if it never happened. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)
said: “The one who repents is like the one who did not sin.” Narrated by Ibn Maajah; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah,
3427.

Secondly:

Breaking the hymen as a result of this action
is not zina, and no hadd punishment or expiation (kafaarah) is required.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah was asked about
masturbation and he replied:

With regard to masturbation, the basic ruling is that it is haraam according to the majority of
scholars, and the one who does it should be given a ta’zeer punishment, but it is not like zina. And Allaah knows best.

Al-Fataawa al-Kubra,
3/439.

Thirdly:

If it is obvious that the hymen has been
broken as a result of masturbation, then you have to tell your fiancé what happened to you, without giving any details that may cause you
embarrassment. It is sufficient for him to know that this happened without any fornication, because the hymen may be broken because of exercise,
being beaten, falling or being sick.

You will never be exposed if you
repent to Allaah and are sincere in your repentance, for Allaah is the Concealer and loves concealment.

And Allaah knows best.

Important note to learn and read quran online

Reading Quran to seek the light to the right path. The holy Quran is the ultimate source and light for all Muslims. To seek this light of it one needs to read Quran. The importance of the text of Quran cannot be doubted or questions. At the same time, the significance of learning Quran with translation holds a great strength for a holy quran reciter.

There are number of issue in the daily life of Muslims, in which Muslims need to improve according to the Quran. Muslims have been practicing the same conventions from long time, without consulting Quran themselves. Unfortunately, many times Muslims ignore the negative side and only see the positive side of what has been written in the Quran.

What is the ruling on taking pictures surreptitiously and transmitting them?

What is the ruling on taking pictures surreptitiously, especially pictures of women, and transmitting them via mobile phones or via the internet, and the poor women do not know about that?.

Praise be to Allaah.

Doing this is undoubtedly haraam, and it involves several
things that are forbidden according to sharee’ah, including the following:

1 – Transgressing the limits set by Allaah. Allaah says
(interpretation of the meaning):

“And whosoever
transgresses the set limits of Allaah, then indeed he has wronged himself”

[al-Talaaq 65:1]

2 – Looking at ‘awrahs which it is forbidden to look at. The
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Do not
follow one glance with another, for the first is allowable but not the
second.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in
Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.

3 – Transgressing
against the sanctity of another Muslim. The Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Every Muslim is sacred to his fellow
Muslim – his blood, his wealth and his honour.”

4 – If the one who takes the picture took it for a reason and
is one who is allowed to see her ‘awrah, such as a female doctor or a
friend, etc, then her taking and transmitting her picture is a betrayal of
trust, and there are many well-known texts which condemn betrayal. The
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The one who
is not trustworthy is not a believer, and the one who does not keep his
promises is not religiously-committed.” Narrated by Ahmad and classed as
saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 7179.

5 – This action causes harm and annoyance to believing women,
and Allaah has issued a warning to those who harm and annoy believing men
and women for no offence on their part, as He says (interpretation of the
meaning):

“And those who annoy
believing men and women undeservedly, they bear (on themselves) the crime of
slander and plain sin”

[al-Ahzaab 33:58]

The words translated here as “undeservedly” mean: without
them having committed a crime for which they deserve to be annoyed, i.e.,
punished. The phrase “they bear (on themselves) the crime of slander”
means, for annoying them for no reason; “plain sin” refers to their
aggression against them and their transgression of the sacred command of
Allaah.

See Tafseer al-Sa’di, p. 1120

The crime is more serious if that involves annoying or
harming a neighbour.

Muslim (64) narrated
from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of
Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “No one from
whose harm his neighbour is not safe will enter Paradise.”

“Harm” here means wrongdoing, deceit and annoyance.

6 – This is similar to the action of the hypocrites who used
to harrass the believing women. Allaah issued a stern warning to them when
He said (interpretation of the meaning):

“If the hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is a disease
(evil desire for illegal sex), and those who spread false news among the
people in Al‑Madeenah stop not, We shall certainly let you overpower them,
then they will not be able to stay in it as your neighbours but a little
while.

61. Accursed, they shall
be seized wherever found, and killed with a (terrible) slaughter”

[al-Ahzaab 33:60-61]

“We shall certainly let you overpower them” means: We
will command you to punish them and fight them, and We will give you power
over them.

The verse does not
mention the action that they are supposed to stop doing, rather it includes
every evil action that occurred to them, such as insulting Islam and its
followers, spreading false rumours about the Muslims, seeking to sow discord
among them, accusing the believing women of bad and immoral actions, and
other sins committed by such people.

See Tafseer al-Sa’di, p. 1121

7 – It goes against the Islamic command to seek permission
before entering people’s houses. Allaah says (interpretation of the
meaning):

“O you who believe! Enter not houses other than your own,
until you have asked permission and greeted those in them; that is better
for you, in order that you may remember.

28. And if you find no one therein, still, enter not until
permission has been given. And if you are asked to go back, go back, for it
is purer for you. And Allaah is All‑Knower of what you do”

[al-Noor 24:27]

Imam al-Bukhaari (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

“Chapter: Seeking permission to enter has been ordained
because of the gaze”

al-Haafiz said:

i.e., it was prescribed because of that, because if a person
enters without permission he may see something that the person whose house
it is does not want him to see. A clear example of that appears in the
report narrated by al-Bukhaari in al-Adab al-Mufrad, and by Abu
Dawood and al-Tirmidhi, and classed as hasan by the latter, from Thawbaan
and attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him): “It is not permissible for a Muslim to look inside a house until he
has asked permission; once he has done that, he has entered.” Classed as
saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Adab al-Mufrad.  So once he has
been given permission, then it is as if he has already entered, i.e., he
comes under the same ruling as someone who is already inside the house.

Moreover al-Bukhaari (6241) and Muslim narrated that Sahl ibn
Sa’d (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “A man looked through a hole at
the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and the
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had a stick with
which he was scratching his head. He said: “If I had known that you were
watching, I would have stabbed you in the eye with it. Seeking permission
has been ordained because of the gaze.”

Al-Nawawi said: “A stick [midra] with which he was scratching
his head”: a midra is a piece of iron that is used to tidy the hair of the
head. And it was said that it is like a comb.

“Permission has been ordained because of the gaze” – what
this means is that seeking permission is prescribed and enjoined in
sharee’ah, and it has been ordained lest the gaze fall upon something
haraam. So it is not permissible for anyone to look through a door or
anything else through which his gaze may fall upon a non-mahram women. And
Allaah knows best.

Al-Bukhaari (6242) and Muslim narrated from Anas ibn Maalik
that a man peeped into one of the apartments of the Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings
of Allaah be upon him) stood up with an arrowhead and it is as if I can see
him now, trying to poke him (whilst the man was not aware).

This hadeeth indicates that it is permissible to punish the
one who looks into a house without the permission of the owner by throwing
something at him, even if it puts out his eye.

Muslim (2158) narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever looks into a
house without the people’s permission, it is permissible for them to put out
his eye.”

Al-Nawawi said:

With regard to the words of the Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him):  “Whoever looks into a house without the
people’s permission, it is permissible for them to put out his eye,” the
scholars said that this is to be understood as referring to a case where
someone  looks into a man’s house and he throws a stone at him and it puts
out his eye. Is it permissible to throw something without warning him? There
are two points of view among our companions, the more correct of which is
that it is permissible, because of the apparent meaning of this hadeeth. And
Allaah knows best.

8 – This action causes corruption in society and spreads
immorality and evil. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, those who like
that (the crime of) illegal sexual intercourse should be propagated among
those who believe, they will have a painful torment in this world and in the
Hereafter. And Allaah knows and you know not”

[al-Noor 24:19]

If this stern warning is addressed to one who likes in his
heart that immorality should spread and prevail, then how about one who
actually causes it to spread? Undoubtedly his punishment will be more severe
and his sin will be greater.

9 – Keeping the picture is persisting in sin and
transgressing the sacred limits set by Allaah, and it keeps the one who does
it further away from repentance. Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with
him) said: “There is no minor sin if one persists in it (i.e., it becomes a
major sin).”

10 – Transmitting the picture further compounds the sin of
the one who committed it, and takes him further away from the mercy and
forgiveness of Allaah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be
upon him) said: “All of my ummah will be forgiven except those who commit
sin openly. It is part of committing sin openly if a man does something at
night and Allaah conceals him, but in the morning he says, ‘O So and so, I
did such and such last night.’ His Lord had concealed him all night long,
but in the morning he disclosed what Allaah had concealed.” Agreed upon.

We ask Allaah to set the affairs of the Muslims straight.
