Problem of forgetting appointments

I am a young mother of two young children.

I have found that since i have had my children my memory has gotten very bad. Subhanallah I forget so much.

So many people ask things of me and i say yes to them and have full intention of doing it for them however i simply forget. I know that this is a problem also for most of the sisters these days also.

I was told by my maternal nurse that it is normal when women start having children. can it also be because of sins? Will i be in sin for not keeping my word?

Praise be to Allaah.

Perhaps your forgetfulness – or your weak memory – is a
result of giving birth, as your doctor said. This is not something to worry
about. Or this forgetfulness may be caused by sin, because sins result in
punishments that affect the heart and the body. Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim (may
Allaah have mercy on him) mentioned more than sixty punishments for sin in
his book al-Daa’ wa’l-Dawa’.

So if a person feels that
he is losing some blessing, he should hasten to repent to Allaah. Allaah
says (interpretation of the meaning):

“That is so because Allaah will never change a grace which
He has bestowed on a people until they change what is in their ownselves”

[al-Anfaal 8:53]

If a person makes a promise then forgets it unintentionally,
there is no sin on him, because Allaah has forgiven this ummah for what they
forget, as is indicated by the texts. For example, the last two verses of
Soorat al-Baqarah (interpretation of the meaning):

“Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error”

[al-Baqarah 2:286]

And Allaah has said: “I have done that.” (Narrated by
Muslim)

There are also means that will help you to remember
appointments, such as using a diary (in book or electronic form) to record
appointments by day and date. This is a means which is proven to work. How
many people forget their appointments, but they organize them by using these
reminders.

Another means is using an electronic alarm clock or a mobile
phone to remind you of the time of an appointment… and other modern means
that are available.

There are also audio reminders on which you can record
appointments and it will speak to remind you of the appointment.

Each person must pay as much attention as possible to this
matter, because breaking promises is one of the signs of the hypocrites, as
it says in the hadeeth: “There are four characteristics, whoever has them is
a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of them has one of the attributes of
hypocrisy until he gives it up: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a
pledge he betrays it; when he makes a promise he breaks it; and when he
disputes he resorts to obscene speech.”

 (Narrated by Muslim, 53)

Keeping appointments is one of the signs of the people of
faith.

Similarly those who miss appointments for a reason such as that mentioned in the question should explain their reasons to the other party involved, so that he will not be offended. We ask Allaah to protect us and you from all kinds of evil. And Allaah is the Source of strength.

What is the best way to treat anxiety?

A person is affected by a stressful situation to the point that it is affecting their physical and mental health. In addition to making the correct dua'a for anxiety and stress, is it permissible to seek the professional help of a Muslim psychiatrist/psychologist if one feels they may be having some type of mental difficulties in handling their situation? If permissable, would it be necessary to confirm that the doctor himself/herself is following the correct aqeedah?Would it also be permissable to take anti-depressants or mood controlling medication if prescribed in order to better handle one's stress levels.

Praise be to Allaah.

There is nothing wrong with treating the diseases that befall
a person, and this is not forbidden. But that is subject to the condition
that the treatment does not cause side effects which are worse than the
problem itself.

We advise the one who is sick – whether that is spiritual
(mental) illness such as anxiety and depression, or physical illness such as
various kinds of pain – to hasten first of all to treat the problem with
ruqyah as prescribed in sharee’ah. This means verses and ahaadeeth which are
recommended in sharee’ah and in which the texts state there is healing for
diseases.

Then we advise treating it with natural materials which
Allaah has created, such as honey and plants, for Allaah has created special
properties in them which may treat many kinds of diseases, and at the same
time they do not have any side effects on the one who takes them.

We think that you should not take artificial chemical
remedies for anxiety. For this disease a person needs a spiritual remedy
rather than a chemical one.

So he needs to increase his faith and his trust in his Lord;
he needs to make more du’aa’ and pray more. If he does that, his anxiety
will be removed. Seeking to relax by means of doing acts of worship has a
great effect on the soul, dispelling many kinds of psychological disease.
Hence we do not see any benefit in going to a psychologist whose beliefs are
corrupt, let alone one who is a kaafir. The more the doctor knows about
Allaah and His religion, the better advice he will give to his patient.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Whoever works righteousness — whether male or female — while
he (or she) is a true believer (of Islamic Monotheism) verily, to him We
will give a good life (in this world with respect, contentment and lawful
provision), and We shall pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the
best of what they used to do (i.e. Paradise in the Hereafter)”

[al-Nahl 16:97]

It was narrated that Suhayb said: the Messenger of Allaah
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “How wonderful is the
affair of the believer, for all his affairs are good, and this applies to no
one except the believer. If something good happens to him, he gives thanks,
and that is good for him, and it something bad happens to him, he bears it
with patience, and that is good for him.”

(Narrated by Muslim, 2999)

This world should not be the main concern of the Muslim.
Worry about his provision should not find any room in his heart or mind,
lest that make his sickness and his anxiety worse.

It was narrated that Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him)
said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Whoever is mainly concerned about the Hereafter, Allaah will make him feel
independent of others and will make him focused and content, and his worldly
affairs will fall into place. But whoever is mainly concerned with this
world, Allaah will make him feel in constant need of others and will make
him distracted and unfocused, and he will get nothing of this world except
what is decreed for him.”

(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2389; classed as saheeh by Shaykh
al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 6510).

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have
mercy on him) said: “When a person spends his entire day with no other
concern but Allaah alone, Allaah, may He be glorified, will take care of all
his needs and take care of all that is worrying him; He will empty his heart
so that it will be filled only with love for Him, free his tongue so that it
will speak only in remembrance of Him (dhikr) and cause all his
faculties to work only in obedience to Him. But if a person spends his
entire day with no other concern but this world, Allaah will make him bear
its distress, anxiety and pain; He will leave him to sort himself out, and
cause his heart to be distracted from the love of Allaah towards the love of
some created being, cause his tongue to speak only in remembering people
instead of remembering Allaah, and cause him to use his talents and energy
in obeying and serving them. So he will strive hard, labouring like some
work-animal, to serve something other than Allaah… Everyone who turns away
from being a true slave of Allaah and obeying Him and loving Him will be
burdened with servitude, love and obedience to some created being. Allaah
says (interpretation of the meaning): ‘And whosoever turns away (blinds
himself) from the remembrance of the Most Beneficent (Allaah), We appoint
for him a shaytaan (devil) to be a qareen (intimate companion) to him.’
[al-Zukhruf 43:36].”

Al-Fawaa’id,
p. 159

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may
Allaah have mercy on him) was asked:

Can a believer become mentally
ill? What is the treatment for that according to sharee’ah? Please note that
modern medicine treats these illnesses with modern medicines only.

He replied:

Undoubtedly a person may
suffer from psychological or mental diseases, such as anxiety about the
future and regret for the past. Psychological diseases affect the body more
than physical diseases affect it. Treating these diseases by means of the
things prescribed in sharee’ah – i.e., ruqyah – is more effective than
treating them with physical medicines, as is well known.

One of the means of treating
them is mentioned in the saheeh hadeeth from Ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be
pleased with him): “There is no-one who is afflicted by distress and grief,
and says: ‘Allaahumma inni ‘abduka ibn ‘abdika ibn amatija naasyati bi
yadika, maada fiyya hukmuka, ‘adlun fiyya qadaa’uka. As’aluka bi kulli ismin
huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka aw anzaltahu fi kitaabika aw ‘allamtahu
ahadan min khalqika aw ista’tharta bihi fi ‘ilm il-ghayb ‘indaka an taj’al
al-Qur’aana rabee’ qalbi wa noor sadri wa jalaa’ huzni wa dhihaab hammi
(O Allaah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your maidservant; my
forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your
decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You
have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of
Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the Unseen with
You, that You make the Qur’aan the life of my heart and the light of my
breast, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety),’ but
Allaah will take away his distress and grief, and replace it with joy.” This
is one of the remedies prescribed in sharee’ah.

One can also say “Laa ilaaha illa Anta, subhaanaka inni
kuntu min al-zaalimeen (none has the right to be worshipped but You (O
Allaah), Glorified (and Exalted) be You [above all that (evil) they
associate with You]! Truly, I have been of the wrongdoers)”
[al-Anbiya 21:87 – interpretation of the meaning].

Whoever wants to know more than that should refer to what the
scholars have written about dhikr, such as al-Waabil al-Sayyib by Ibn
al-Qayyim; al-Kalim al-Tayyib by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Tayimiyah;
al-Adhkaar by al-Nawawi; Zaad al-Ma’aad by Ibn al-Qayyim.

But because people’s faith is weak nowadays, they are less
receptive to the remedies prescribed in sharee’ah. So people nowadays have
started to rely on physical medicines more than on the remedies prescribed
in sharee’ah. But when a person’s faith is strong, the remedies prescribed
in sharee’ah are completely effective, and may work faster than physical
medicine. We all know about the story of the man whom the Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) sent on a campaign and he camped
near some Arab people, but those people near whom he camped showed him no
hospitality at all. Allaah willed that their leader should be stung by a
scorpion, and they said to one another, “Go to those people who have camped
nearby, perhaps you will find a raaqi (one who can recite ruqyah) with
them.” The Sahaabah said to them, “We will not recite ruqyah for your leader
unless you give us such and such a number of sheep.” They said, “Fine.” So
one of the Sahaabah went and recited ruqyah for the one who had been stung.
He recited Soorat al-Faatihah only, and the one who had been stung got up as
if released from a chain.

Reciting al-Faatihah had such an effect on this man because
it came from a heart that was filled with faith. The Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him) asked him, “How did you come to know that
it (Soorat al-Faatihah) could be recited as a ruqyah?”

But in these times when religious commitment and faith have
become weak, people have started to rely on external physical medicines, and
they are suffering as a result.

But on the other hand there are charlatans who play with
people’s minds; they are clever and able to trick people, claiming that they
are good reciters of ruqyah when in fact they are consuming people’s wealth
unlawfully. So people are caught between two extremes; one extreme is those
who think that ruqyah has no effect at all, and the other is those
tricksters who play with people’s minds by reciting false and deceitful
readings. And there are some who are moderate in their approach to this
issue.

We ask Allaah to protect us and you from the evils of
anxiety and worry, and to open our hearts to faith, guidance and tranquility.

She has the bad habit of nail biting

This is one question which i think will help many of your clients..im a nail biter, and a chronic one too. no matter how hard i try, i havent been able to give up this awful habit.

Ive heard that nail biting is deeply disliked in Islam, but nobody has been able to give me any substantive reasoning to prove this.

Can you please guide me here?.

Praise be to Allaah.

The doctors say that the phenomenon of nail
biting among children is connected to psychological problems. If you have had this problem since you were small, then we advise you to consult a
psychologist whom you trust with regard to his religious commitment and knowledge.

From the point of view of sharee’ah:

Islam brought the best of attitudes and
habits, and forbids bad attitudes and habits. This habit – nail biting – is disliked by most people and they regard it as a bad habit. This is in
addition to the physical harm that it may do, because of the dirt that collects under the fingernails and the damage that this may do to the nails
and teeth.

Hence you should make yourself stop this
habit. That may be difficult in the beginning, but you will get used to it and it will become a habit after that. This is the case with all good
attitudes that a person can make himself do until they becomes a habit and second nature for him. As the Prophet (peace and blessings of
Allaah be upon him) said, “Knowledge comes by learning and patience comes by making oneself be patient.” classed as hasan by al-Albaani in

Dealing with a child who gets angry quickly

I have a son who is very hot tempered. How can I deal with this characteristic?.

Praise be to Allaah.

The issue of dealing with anger has already
been discussed. Please see question no.
658. Means of
dealing with anger include the following:

·
Seeking refuge with
Allaah from the accursed Shaytaan.

·
Keeping quiet.

·
Calming down; if you
are standing, you should sit down; if you are sitting, you should lie down.

·
Remembering the
reward for restraining anger, as it says in the saheeh hadeeth: “Do not get
angry and Paradise will be yours.”

·
Understanding the
high status of one who controls himself, as it says in the saheeh hadeeth:
“Whoever restrains his anger, Allaah will cover his faults. Whoever controls
his fury – even if he is able to show it – Allaah will fill his heart with
hope on the Day of Resurrection.” (Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in
al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 906).

·
Learning what the
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) teachings
concerning anger.

·
Knowing that
controlling anger is one of the signs of piety, as it says in the hadeeth
quoted above.

·
Paying attention
when reminded, controlling oneself and following advice.

·
Knowing the bad
effects of anger.

·
Thinking about how
one is affected at the moment of anger.

·
Praying that Allaah
will remove this resentment from one's heart.

There follows a lovely story which will help
you to deal with the child whose problem you mention:

There was a boy who was always losing his
temper. His father gave him a bag full of nails and said to him, “My son, I
want you to hammer a nail into our garden fence every time you need to
direct your anger against something and you lose your temper.”

So the son started to follow his father’s
advice. On the first day he hammered in 37 nails, but getting the nails into
the fence was not easy, so he started trying to control himself when he got
angry. As the days went by, he was hammering in less nails, and within weeks
he was able to control himself and was able to refrain from getting angry
and from hammering nails. He came to his father and told him what he had
achieved. His father was happy with his efforts and said to him: “But now,
my son, you have to take out a nail for every day that you do not get
angry.”

The son started to take out the nails for
each day that he did not get angry, until there were no nails left in the
fence.

He came to his father and told him what he had achieved. His father took him to the fence and said, “My son, you have done well, but look at these holes in the fence. This fence will never be the same again.” Then he added: “When you say things in a state of anger, they leave marks like these holes on the hearts of others. You can stab a person and withdraw the knife but it doesn’t matter how many times you say ‘I’m sorry,’ because the wound will remain.

He is afraid of meeting people

I am a young Muslim man. I feel afraid of people in general, and this makes me introverted to the extent that sometimes I may be entitled to something but I do not ask for it because I am afraid. I usually avoid people because I am scared they think badly of me. Is there any solution? Does this mean my faith is weak?.

Praise be to Allaah.

Faith becomes weaker as a result of
neglecting obligatory duties and doing haraam things. So long as you are doing your duty towards Allaah and heeded His prohibitions, your
introversion and keeping away from people, and your fear of them,  will not harm you. But if your fear keeps you from doing any obligatory duty
then you will have committed sin thereby, for example, if your fear stops you attending prayers in congregation in the mosque, or stops you
denouncing any evil action that you could change by speaking out or taking action, or stops you from offering advice that you should offer to
those who need it.

You should not give in to these fears or
accept them, rather you should look for the causes and try to deal with them. It may help you to know that created beings have no power to bring
benefit to themselves or to ward off harm, rather if the nation were to gather together to benefit you in some way, they could not do so unless
Allaah has decreed that for you, and if they were to gather together to harm you in some way, they could not do that unless Allaah has decreed
that for you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.

Everything is in the hand of Allaah, and He
is the One Whom you should fear and put your hopes in. The criticism of people has no value and carries no weight; it is sufficient for the
believer to attain the pleasure of Allaah even if all the people are displeased with him.

Whoever adheres to the command of Allaah and
persists in doing so, is the most honoured of people, for Allaah has decreed honour for His believing slaves. As Allaah says (interpretation of
the meaning):

“But honour, power and glory belong to Allaah, and to His Messenger (Muhammad), and to the
believers, but the hypocrites”

[al-Munaafiqoon 63:8]

The effects of this honour should be
manifested in the believer’s words and actions, in all circumstances. He should speak up for the truth, offer sincere advice, remind people and
teach them. His approval and anger should be for the sake of Allaah, and he should only get angry when the limits of Allaah are transgressed.

This is what a person will be able to do when
he becomes aware of his role in life, for he is commanded to worship Allaah and to convey and spread His religion as much as he can. This means
that he should mix with people and bear any annoyance they cause with patience, especially close relatives. According to a hadeeth narrated by
al-Tirmidhi, 1307 and Ibn Maajah (4032) from Ibn ‘Umar, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The believer who mixes
with people and bears any annoyance they cause with patience, is better than the believer who does not mix with people and does not bear any
annoyance they cause with patience.” (This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 6651).

Perhaps you can start to get to know some
righteous friends with whom you can feel comfortable and secure, who can help you to overcome your feelings of fear of people, and this will help
you to find the sincere brotherhood, good treatment, clear goals and sincere intentions that you are missing in the people around you.

We also advise you to go to a doctor who
specializes in treating psychological illness, perhaps he could help you to solve your problem.

We ask Allaah to help you and give you strength.

He is suffering from waswaas (insinuating whispers) of the Shaytaan about the Essence of Allaah

He is suffering from waswaas (insinuating whispers) of the Shaytaan about the Essence of Allaah
A man is experiencing waswaas (insinuating whispers) from the Shaytaan having to do with Allaah, and he is very afraid of that.

Praise be to Allaah.

The questioner has mentioned this problem and is afraid
of its consequences. I say to him, Rejoice, for its consequences cannot
be anything but good. By means of this waswaas, the Shaytaan
tries to gain control over the believers and shake the sound belief
in their hearts, and make them suffer psychological and intellectual
anxiety that will affect the purity of their faith and their life, if
they are believers.

This is not the first or the last time that the believers
are exposed to this. It will continue so long as there is any believer
in this world. The Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) also faced
this problem. It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased
with him) said: “Some of the companions of the Messenger of Allaah
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came to the Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said to him, ‘We find
in ourselves thoughts that are too terrible to speak of.’ He said, ‘Are
you really suffering from that?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘That is
a clear sign of faith.’” (Narrated by Muslim).

It was narrated in al-Saheehayn, also from Abu
Hurayrah, that the Prophet (peace
and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “The Shaytaan comes to one
of you and says, ‘Who created such and such? Who created such and such?’
until he says, ‘Who created your Lord?!’ If that happens to any of you,
let him seek refuge with Allaah and put a stop to these thoughts.”

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased
with them both) that a man came to the Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said, “I think thoughts
to myself, which I would rather  be burnt to a cinder than speak
of them.” The Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Praise be to Allaah, Who has
reduced all his [the Shaytaan’s] plots to mere whispers.” (Narrated
by Abu Dawood).

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on
him) said in Kitaab al-Eemaan: “The believer may suffer from
the whispers of the Shaytaan insinuating thoughts of kufr, which may
make him feel distressed. The Sahaabah said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah,
some of us think thoughts which we would rather fall from heaven to
earth than speak of them.’ He said, ‘That is a clear sign of faith.’
According to one report, ‘… thoughts which are too terrible to speak
of.’ He said, ‘Praise be to Allaah, Who has reduced all his [the Shaytaan’s]
plots to mere whispers,’ meaning that the fact that these whispers come,
but they are so greatly disliked, and they are pushed away from the
heart, is a clear sign of faith. This is like the mujaahid to whom the
enemy comes, but he resists him until he overwhelms him, and this is
a mighty jihaad… Hence the seekers of knowledge and devoted worshippers
experience waswaas and doubts which others do not face, because
they (the others) are not following the way prescribed by Allaah, rather
they are following their own whims and desires and neglecting to remember
their Lord. This is what the Shaytaan wants, in contrast to those who
are striving to draw closer to their Lord by seeking knowledge and worshipping
Him. He is their enemy and seeks to prevent them from drawing closer
to Allaah.” (p. 147 of the Indian edition)

I say to this questioner, if you are faced with this
waswaas from the Shaytaan, then fight it and resist it. Know that it
can never harm you when you fulfil the duty of fighting and resisting
it, and you refuse to be controlled by it. The Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Allaah will forgive
my ummah for any insinuating whispers that may cross their minds, so
long as they do not act upon it or speak of it.” (Agreed upon).

If it is said to you, Do you believe the insinuating
whispers you experience? Do you think that they are true? Do you really
think that Allaah is like what this waswaas says? You would say,
“It is not right for us to speak of this. Glory be to You (O Allaah)!
This is a great lie” [al-Noor 24:16 – interpretation of
the meaning]. You would denounce that in your heart and with your
tongue, and be the one who objects to it the most, for it is only whispers
and thoughts that cross your mind. It is a trap set by the Shaytaan,
who flows through the son of Adam like blood flows, to make you doomed
and to confuse you about your religion.

Hence you will find that the Shaytan does not cast
doubts or suspicions into your heart about trivial matters. For example,
you may hear of the existence of great cities filled with people and
buildings in the east and the west, but it would never cross your mind
some day to doubt that they exist or to criticize them and say that
they are in ruins and unfit for habitation, or that they are uninhabited,
and so on. The Shaytaan has nothing to gain by making people doubt about
these cities. But he does have a lot to gain by corrupting the believer’s
faith, so he strives with his cavalry and his infantry to extinguish
the light of knowledge and guidance in his heart and to make him fall
into the darkness of doubt and confusion. The Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) has told us of the appropriate
remedy for that, which is to seek refuge with Allaah and put a
stop to it. If a person puts a stop to that and continues to
worship Allaah, seeking and hoping for (the reward) which is with Allaah,
that will stop by Allaah’s leave. So turn away from all the thoughts
of this kind that cross your mind. You are worshipping Allaah, calling
upon Him and glorifying Him, and  if you
were to hear anyone ascribing to Allaah the things that are whispered
to you (waswaas), you would probably kill him if you could. So
the things that are whispered to you are neither real nor true, they
are merely imagination and whispers which have no basis.

Our advice may be summed up as follows:

1.
Seek refuge with Allaah and give up these thoughts completely,
as the Prophet (peace and blessings
of Allaah be upon him) commanded.

2.
Remember Allaah and control yourself and do not continue to think
of these whispers.

3.
Occupy yourself with worship and doing good deeds, in obedience
to the command of Allaah and seeking to please Him. When you devote
yourself completely and seriously to worship, you will forget about
these whispers, in sha Allaah.

4.
Frequently seek refuge with Allaah and make du’aa’ to free you
from these whispers.

I ask Allaah to keep you safe and sound, and
protect you from all evils,

way to distinguish the wassasa that is coming from the shaytan

Islam Question and Answer - Psychological Counselling

I'd like to know if there is a way to distinguish the wassasa that is coming from the shaytan, and the wassasa coming from the nafs, and can we know which is coming out of which? And if it is coming out of the nafs, are we going to be punished even if we reject it?.

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

The waswaas which people experience is not all of the same
type or degree, either in terms of the type of sickness or in terms of its
source and effect.

The kind of waswaas which tempts a person to listen to or
look at haraam things or to commit immoral actions, and makes such things
appear attractive to him, comes from three sources: the nafs or self which
is inclined to evil (cf. Yoosuf 12:53), the devils among the jinn, and the
devils among mankind.

Allaah says, describing the first source, which is the nafs
(interpretation of the meaning):

“And indeed We have created man, and We know what his
ownself whispers to him. And We are nearer to him than his jugular vein (by
Our Knowledge)”

[Qaaf 50:16]

Allaah says, describing the second source, which is the
devils among the jinn (interpretation of the meaning):

“Then Shaytaan (Satan) whispered to him, saying: ‘O Adam!
Shall I lead you to the Tree of Eternity and to a kingdom that will never
waste away’”

[Ta-Ha 20:120]

And Allaah says, describing the third source, which is the
devils among mankind (interpretation of the meaning):

“Say: I seek refuge with (Allaah) the Lord of mankind,

2. The King of mankind —

3. The Ilaah (God) of mankind,

4. From the evil of the whisperer (devil who whispers evil
in the hearts of men) who withdraws (from his whispering in one’s heart
after one remembers Allaah).

5. Who whispers in the breasts of mankind.

6. Of jinn and men”

[al-Naas 114:1-6]

So these waswaas may come from the jinn or from the sons of
Adam (human beings).

See question no. 59931

What happens to a Muslim regarding his wudoo’ and prayer,
where he does not know how many times he washed during wudoo’ or how many
rak’ahs he did in prayer, comes from the Shaytaan. If he seeks refuge with
Allaah from the Shaytaan, Allaah will suffice him against him. But if he
gives in to him and responds to the waswaas, the Shaytaan will gain power
over him, and that waswaas will become a chronic problem. This is what is
called al-waswaas al-qahri (overwhelming waswaas). This kind of waswaas – as
one of those who are specialized in this field said – “is a sickness which
befalls some people like any other kind of sickness. It refers to repeated
thoughts, movements, ideas or notions which are of a loathsome nature that a
person would ordinarily reject and strive to resist. He also realizes that
they are wrong and have no meaning, but there is something that is pushing
him towards them and he usually fails to resist them. The strength of these
waswaas may vary, so much so that they appear – to non-specialists – to be
very strong and it seems that the sick person is doing that willingly. This
kind of waswaas may also affect a person in his worship and in his worldly
affairs.”

The waswaas of the Shaytaan may be dispelled by seeking
refuge with Allaah.

The waswaas that comes from one’s own self may also be
dispelled by seeking refuge with Allaah, and by strengthening the connection
between a person and his Lord by doing acts of worship and obedience and by
giving up evil things.

As for al-waswaas al-qahri (overwhelming waswaas), it is a
kind of sickness as stated above.

The difference between the waswaas that comes from the
Shaytaan and the waswaas that comes from the nafs is subtle, as was quoted
by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) from some of
the scholars. He said:

Abu Haazim made a
comparison between the waswasah caused by the nafs and that caused by the
Shaytaan, and said: Whatever your nafs hates for your nafs is from the
Shaytaan, so seek refuge with Allaah from it. And whatever your nafs likes
for your nafs is from your nafs so forbid it to it.

Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 17/529, 530

i.e., the nafs usually whispers concerning things which are
connected to its whims and desires, which people usually like.

Some of the scholars pointed out another important
difference, which is that the waswaas that comes from the Shaytaan makes sin
appear attractive until the Muslim falls into it; if the Shaytaan is unable
to achieve that, he moves on to another sin, and if that does not work he
moves on to a third, and so on. He does not care about making the Muslim
fall into a particular sin, rather what he cares about is making the Muslim
disobey his Lord, and it is all the same to him whether he makes him do
something that is forbidden or omit something that is obligatory, for all of
it is sin and disobedience. As for the waswaas that comes form the nafs, it
is what urges the person to commit a specific sin and repeatedly seeks to
make him do it.

The Muslim will not be punished for the waswaas that comes
from the Shaytaan or from his own nafs, so long as he does not speak of it
or act upon it. But he is commanded to resist it, and if he neglects to
resist it and goes along with it, then he will be punished for that
neglect.

He is commanded not to pay any attention to the waswaas of
the Shaytaan, and to proceed on the basis of the smaller number (of rak’ahs)
in prayer if he is not sure how many he has done. He is commanded to seek
refuge from the Shaytaan and spit drily to his left three times if the
waswaas of the Shaytaan comes to him whilst he is praying. He is commanded
to keep company with good people and avoid bad people. Whoever is negligent
with regard to any of these matters will fall into the traps of his nafs
which is inclined to evil, or will respond to the devils among the jinn and
mankind, in which case he will be punished.

As for overwhelming waswaas, it is a kind of sickness – as
mentioned above – so the Muslim will not be harmed by it and Allaah will not
punish him for it, because it is beyond his control. Allaah says
(interpretation of the meaning):

“Allaah puts no burden on any person beyond what He has
given him”

[al-Talaaq 65:7]

“So
keep your duty to Allaah and fear Him as much as you can”

[al-Taghaabun 64:16]

And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him) said: “Allaah will forgive my ummah for whatever crosses their minds so
long as they do not speak of it or act upon it.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari,
4968; Muslim, 127

The one who is tested with this kind of waswaas must always
read Qur’aan and recite the dhikrs prescribed in sharee’ah, morning and
evening. He must strengthen his faith by doing acts of worship and shunning
evil. He must occupy himself in seeking knowledge, for although the Shaytaan
may gain power over a worshipper, he cannot gain power over one who has
knowledge.

The Shaytaan may come and whisper evil things to a Muslim
about Allaah, or His Messenger, or His sharee’ah, things that the Muslim
hates and does not approve of. The fact that he resists these waswaas and
hates them is a sign of the soundness of his faith. So he should strive to
control his nafs (jihad al-nafs) and not respond to the one who calls him to
evil.

Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

The phrase: “and whether you disclose what is in your own
selves or conceal it, Allaah will call you to account for it” [al-Baqarah
2:284 – interpretation of the meaning] means that even if He brings you
to account and questions you, He will not punish you except for that which a
person is able to ward off. As for that which he cannot ward off, such as
the waswaas of the nafs, no one is accountable for that, and hating evil
waswasah is part of faith.

Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 1/343

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him)
was asked:

Waswaas and ideas may cross a person’s mind, especially to do
with Tawheed and faith; will the Muslim be punished for that?

He replied:

It is narrated in al-Saheehayn and elsewhere that the
Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Allaah will forgive my ummah for whatever crosses their minds so long as
they do not speak of it or act upon it.” Agreed upon. And it is narrated
that the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) asked the Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) about the kinds of waswaas and
thoughts referred to in the question crossing their minds. He (peace
and blessings of Allaah be upon him) replied: “That is a clear sign of
faith.” Narrated by Muslim. And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be
upon him) said: “The people will keep on wondering until it is said, ‘This
was created by Allaah, but who created Allaah?’ Whoever experiences any of
that, let him say, ‘Aamantu Billaahi wa rusulihi (I believe in Allaah
and His Messengers).’” Agreed upon.  According to another report: “Let him
seek refuge with Allaah and stop it.” Narrated by Muslim in his Saheeh.

He is affected by waswaas concerning purity

Many thanks to you for helping people to understand Islam as it was enjoined by Allaah. I am suffering with the problem of washing a great deal when I do wudoo’, such that I need more than two hours to relieve myself and do wudoo’, which is a waste of time and effort and is driving me crazy. I even went to a psychiatrist about this problem. If I sit in a place where someone else has been, I have to brush all my clothes until I feel pure and ready to pray. I am suffering a great deal with this problem. I hope that you can answer me and tell me the name of a book I can read or a du’aa’ I can recite to rid myself of this problem.

Praise be to Allaah.

We ask Almighty Allaah, by His beautiful names and sublime
attributes, to heal you from this problem. It should be noted that this is a
kind of psychological disease that is known as Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder, which refers to thoughts that dominate a person in some ways and
persist with him even though he knows that they are mistaken and are not
correct. This may be dealt with in several ways:

1 – Thinking positively of Allaah, making a great deal of
du’aa’, and beseeching Allaah to heal you from this waswaas.

2 – Getting used to ignoring these waswaas and not paying any
attention to them. You can put a suitable amount of water in a vessel, and
do not make wudoo’ directly from the tap any more; make yourself do wudoo’
from this vessel only. Tell yourself that there is no other water available
except what is in this vessel, and make do with what it contains. Do not
wash any part of the body more than three times. Even if the Shaytaan tells
you that your wudoo’ is not valid, this is just a whisper from the Shaytaan
and does not mean anything.

3 – The same applies to brushing your clothes after sitting
in a place where someone else has sat. You should ignore this waswaas and
force yourself not to brush your clothes. You should train yourself in this
manner no matter what the waswaas is.

4 – You should remember the fiqhi principle which is that
what is certain cannot be altered by something doubtful. If you are certain
of something, you should not pay attention to any doubts after that. If you
have done something then do not pay attention to any doubts that come along
after doing it. If you have washed your hand, then do not pay any attention
to doubts that come, even fleeting doubts, suggesting that you have not
washed your hand, as Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him)
said:

Doubts after doing something do not matter, otherwise doubts
will increase.

You should not pay any attention to doubts that come after
completing an act of worship, and even if a man has a lot of doubts he
should not pay any attention to them.

5 – There is nothing wrong with consulting a trustworthy
psychiatrist who can prescribe some useful treatment for you.
